Could you Help Manage a Museum

The Chain Bridge Forge project started in 2011 when South Holland District Council gave “The Friends of Chain Bridge” a 25-year lease to create a living museum, and pursuant of educational goals embodied in a modern museum. The Friends drew up plans and in July 2011 we were awarded our first Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant for which we could develop the Forge as a museum and open it to the public in September 2012. The Forge has developed and now offers a portable Forge which can be taken to events.  The Blacksmith takes on commercial work and offers a taster to young and old. A subsequent grant allowed us to start recording the history of South Holland online. This has resulted in the collection of 500 books and publications which now forms the basis of our library and our online collection which boasts of over 6000 artefacts which are displayed on our website www.southhollandlife.com and social media. The Forge has also created a historic walks booklet and video which takes the visitor around the town on a series of walks which illustrates the towns history.

The most recent addition is an Innovation Area which offers a modern contrast to the Blacksmithing. It offers 3D printing and scanning and a virtual reality project which emulates the work of the Blacksmith.

The Forge has also achieved Museum Accreditation in 2014

We are now seeking a number of Volunteers to build on our initial success and take us further along our journey.
